Sectorial Perceptions of Parental Involvement: Similarities and Dissimilarities

Abstract

The study examined the perceptions of parental involvement among 320 Arab-sector- and 319 Jewish-sector elementary-school teachers in Israel. On a questionnaire listing potential components of the concept, participants indicated the degree of pertinence of each. Findings showed that teachers in both sectors agreed that parental involvement includes three components: pedagogy, control, and resources. Both sectors identified the three most significant parental activities as related to the hiring and firing of teachers, understanding classroom social dynamics, and fundraising for extracurricular activities. A cross-sector conceptualization of the term parental involvement creates a shared language and facilitates public discourse on educational issues.

Author Biography

Yael Fisher, Achva Academic College

Yael Fisher holds a Ph.D. in Educational Administration. She is the head of the Graduate School at Achva Academic College in Israel, and serves as a senior lecturer in the department of Educational Administration there. Her research activities focus on educational administration and policy, parental involvement, and excellence in education. Dr. Fisher has published numerous articles and three books: The road to excellence: Success stories of five Schools in Israel (2008), There is another way: Success stories of parents partnerships in schools (2010); and New horizons for facet theory: Interdisciplinary collaboration searching for structure in content spaces and measurement (2011). For the past ten years, she has served as a consultant in the Ministry of Education and as a personal advisor to the Minister for Minority Affairs. Dr. Fisher has played a major role in determining the policy of training programs for school principals in Israel.
