ABSTRCT

Before the popularity of smart phone, traditional English learning way

was chosen by a lot of students. Traditional English learning way made

the study more difficult for many students, and resulting in non-active

study phenomenon. In recent years, with the help of smart phone APP,

the quality and ability of students’ learning have been generally

improved. It dramatically improves student's learning interest. The

rapid emerging of Internet Technology in China provides tremendous

development space for virtual learning. At the same time, it also

launches enormous challenge to traditional learning way. Traditional

learning way suffers unprecedented crisis, however, virtual learning

way which from being questioned, there are inevitability and value of

virtual learning which people begin to think about. In order to deal with

the new situation, this paper outlines the online learning method and

the traditional learning method respectively through comparative

analysis. Through the literature review method to search the relevant

references, the information obtained is integrated and summarized, the

existing problems of network learning methods and traditional learning

methods are analyzed. We can further put forward rational suggestions

for future development.

INTRODUCTION

With the deepening of globalization, exchange between people not only includes communication

from one city and another, but also involves communication between countries which covers

politics, culture and economics. For instance, e-commerce, which means international

communication and cooperation, has been used more and more widely. At the same time, network

brings an important implication in work and life, and it is a part of many people to learn, work and

live. In this background, English as a language owns strong practicability.

As the blossom of multimedia technology and computer networks, networks have become a deep- rooted part of people's mind. The use of internet within education is rising and brings tremendous

convenience for people’s life. However, how to learn English effectively and how to utilize it indeed

to our real life become the question which we always research.

With the further broadening of network coverage areas, network infrastructures of poverty- stricken areas are being established step by step. Moreover, online learning becomes a top priority

because of its limitation of time and space. Online learning is a crucial direction for future English,

there are various advantages for virtual learning that can’t be matched by traditional learning.

Meanwhile, we can’t ignore the necessity of traditional learning. In order to tackle new situations of

internet development, this thesis mainly discusses the advantages between web English learning

and traditional English learning, and takes efficient learning through combinative advantages for

the general students

LITERATURE REVIEW

Although traditional teaching methods are still chosen by a large number of students at present, as

the web evolves, the level of economy keeps growing and the mobile phone penetration rate

increases every year. An increasing number of students begin to take advantage of mobile APP to

learn English whether in English majors or in non-English majors. Various mobile APP are also used

by middle school students and even elementary school students, teachers and textbooks are no

rarely way to acquire learning resources. In the survey result of Liu, Wang and Mo (2018) which

makes specific analysis about the use of English APP, the share of English learning APP in middle

school students and college students achieved expected goal, and the share of English learning APP

in elementary school students that outperformed expectation. English learning APP in middle

school students was especially frequent, subsequently college students. In general, English learning

APP becomes one of the most sought-after learning ways.

With the amazing speed of cyberspace, there are many mobile APP widely utilized in education not

only in our country but also in foreign countries. Moreover, there are available ways for language

learning on network environment that helps a growing number of people enjoy it. Such as people

like to insert English phrases when they communicate with friends in social medium, it can help

them reinforce an army of vocabularies. The significance of the Internet within education is a good

recognized fact. It gives access to many information resources that are difficult to obtain through

additional traditional means (2012). The use of the Internet within higher education is rising and

has turned into a significant topic in a lot of educational researches and journals. It is playing a

significant role in improving and facilitating the English (2013).

Web-based learning is springing up as the extensively used of the Internet and information

technology in the educational area, with the help of this learning ways, the interesting of learning

English can get a significant improvement and it is conducive to cultivating an interest and

motivating students. However, in real classes, it is difficult for most teachers to combine with

learning needs of every student to take targeted teaching activities. Therefore, in this situation, it is

hard to master English knowledge of every lesson for many students, ultimately, overall learning

effect is not ideal and it is not beneficial to boost English learning holistically. But if the relevant

activities about web-based learning can be properly introduced, the study enthusiasm could be

motivated. It also helps student deep learning and enhances English knowledge. Students can utilize

flexibility of online learning and take reiterative learning to cement and master relevant knowledge

specifically according to their disadvantages. Online learning software such as recently widely used

of Scallops words, which helps lots of students better reinforce foundation of vocabulary, all of those

can help students happily attend web-based English learning and enjoy genuinely the joys of

learning.

Before there is web-based learning English, it could not be denied that there are certain functions

in our traditional learning ways, such recitation as a traditional effective learning method, there are

not only effective results in Chinese teaching but also gain excellent promotion in English teaching.

However, some western scholars have a misunderstanding with recitation and take no count of it,

they think traditional Chinese learning is unhelpful to learn foreign languages. Linguist Olson6

19887indicated that the practice of memorizing texts was caused by a blind worship of book

knowledge. An expert in second language 6English7 educator Jack C. Richards who wrote Beyond

Training which quoted the results of a questionnaire survey, this result indicated it made no sense

to learn English through study English language rules, repetition and memorization of English

language fragments (2011).First of all, we need to consider national conditions and the actual

situation that we lack language learning environment in English learning aspect. In this case,

recitation as a traditional and excellent learning way, if it can be used properly, we not only can keep

up with the times but also can be benefit to input and output of English language. The ability on

reading, writing and speaking can be enhanced and the sense of language also can be cultivated.

A COMPARISON BETWEEN THE WEB-BASED LEARNING METHOD AND THE TRADITIONAL

ENGLISH LEARNING METHOD

The Advantages of Online Learning

Virtual learning is a process in which students shift to individual learning. And teachers who taught

virtually are experimenting and creating innovative platforms. It also means that countless teachers

will face the possibility of standing in front of a camera instead of a classroom. Contrast to bricks- and-mortar schools, virtual learning enjoys five distinctive advantages. Firstly, the restriction of

time and resources can be broken which help students expand the ability of autonomic learning,

legitimately allocate study time and subjects. The time of every class is fixed, students are arranged

to take fixed subjects in specific time. Nevertheless, there are weak sides and strengths for every

student in learning subjects. Schools offer courses in line with class schedule, if so, every strong

subject will be enhanced, weak subject will be weakened. Virtual learning is different, the main

reason why most college students choose to study at home is that it is helpful to teach students in

accordance with their aptitude. Because only students are aware of their real problems, it can help

students reasonably and freely allocate time and learning subjects, help students keep learning and

curiosity alive. Learning time and learning resources can be further optimized and the all-round

development of students can be further improved. Secondly, space limitation can be broken.

Economic disparity in regional leads to regional differences in educational resources. The majority

of educational resources concentrate on developed areas, other less developed areas are difficult to

enjoy and employ. However, with the nationwide coverage of Internet, the infrastructures of less

developed areas are constantly built up and the costs of mobile traffic are decreasing significantly.

At the same time, thresholds of Internet are reducing gradually, which help more people join the

network security information sharing ecosystem, it is help to ease the imbalance in the development

of educational resources.As we know, there are serious shortages of instructors in many rural areas,

learning resources and channels are very single, that is the past and now many rural areas can

connect Internet. On this occasion, various learning resources can be reasonably utilized by lots of

students. They can take targeted learning through varieties of APP; it is beneficial to gradually

enhance knowledge and further broaden extra-curricular knowledge. The popular of QQ and

Wechat provide better learning platform for poorly educated areas. Students can utilize QQ or

Wechat to discuss and communicate in spare time that students can develop own talent and

wisdom, help them facilitate mutual learning and common progress. There is one more point, there

is a great virtue in web-based learning that educational expense can be dramatically reduced. In

America, many schools that experience a prolonged closure. Online and low-residency educational

programs have risen in popularity, especially considering the outrageous costs of their

conventional learning ways, in which enrollment dropped by 5%. It is about to undergo a profound

and potentially permanent change. Next, web-based learning can cultivate creative consciousness

of students. The club of Rome, in a study entitled “to learn without end”, which was divided into two

types of contemporary human learning: maintenance learning and creative learning.

This report pointed that function of maintenance learning aimed to gain existing knowledge and

experience, foster adaptive capacity of real society. The function of creative learning aimed to

enhance student's ability to detect and absorb new information and put forward new

questions(2018).Web-based learning pays attention to creative ability and particularly puts

emphasis on helping student utilize adaptive learning ways to receive effective learning and update

knowledge, rather than emphasize substantial knowledge to students. The speed of knowledge

acquisition can be improved in learning process. In the end, web-based learning is age-independent.

If our country has a developed higher education system, the nation will be prosperous. The 17th

CPC National Congress, came up with "the learning society and lifelong learning "which provides

lifelong learning opportunities for working people, the elderly, housewives and disadvantage

groups. The spring up of online learning can avoid limitations of traditional learning that lifelong

learning chances can be afforded for disadvantage groups, excellent educational services can be

furnished for citizens and accelerate to build up learning society.

The Disadvantages of Online Learning

Of course, it is an arduous and long process from traditional teaching method to new web-based

learning way. In this process, the changes of learning environment and learning ways need adaptive

process that is inevitable. There are some troubles and disadvantages when students confront

distance learning. Firstly, though online resources are plentiful, there are numerous unhealthy

websites and attractive games. Some students with impoverished self-control will be difficult to

grapple with adverse resources and attractive games. Some students even will get carried away

with games. Secondly, learning habits of students have been formed. Students always acquire and

learn new knowledge with the guidance of teachers and they want teachers to build a learning

environment for them, and tell them what to learn and how to learn. However, online learning is

initiative learning. It requires students actively acquiring and absorbing new knowledge. If students

without teachers’ guidance which has a tremendous influence on learning effectiveness, especially

failure could be probably increased when students take improper learning ways. Thirdly, it is not

helpful for emotional connection. Learning is a humane service, one of objectives is to help students

gain knowledge and make it convenient for people to communicate and exchange. When students

rely on technology to mediate their interactions, they "forget how important face-to-face

conversation is to their relationships, creativity and capacity for empathy." Those interactions are

crucial to human happiness. Students can not directly appreciate personality charm of teachers and

it is not beneficial to express their emotion and communicate with each other. Finally, there are key

risks with remote learning: there are trolls or hackers to get access to student's private information,

which can happen when unauthorized third parties harass virtual classrooms in real-time or break

into educational data repositories. It is hard to guarantee student's data will not be used for

marketing, advertising, product development and profile building, or sold to data brokers or similar

entities.

The Advantages of Traditional Learning

At present, this so-called traditional learning method in our country which based on the theory of

teaching represented by the former Soviet educator Kailov and combined with the actual situation

of our country in 1950s to put forward the "closed" classroom learning pattern. It took teach- centered mode and knowledge teaching as the main objective, had been gradually developed and

formed (2009). Now traditional learning method is utilized by English teaching, up to now China's

education is dominated by traditional learning method. The advantages of traditional English

learning mainly include: Firstly, teachers in school who usually have been trained and they work

relatively well. They can make well-organized plan to develop educational activities with goal and

focal point according to instructional theory and principle so that students can smoothly study.

Schools are extremely careful for the selection of teaching material. The edit of teaching material

attaches importance to systematization of learning. Therefore, comprehensive, systematic and solid

basic knowledge can be easily acquired under systematic teaching from teachers. Secondly, the

pandemic may well remind people of the importance of bricks-mortar school. Beyond academics,

schools can serve communities as a source of food for lower income students, counseling, and the

arts. Teachers may also be able to do their jobs more creatively; teachers have more independence

to create the best curriculum possible for their students that help students pour into more

emotional coloring in learning process through more intimate touching. Finally, teachers are the

model for students' learning.

They play an exemplary role for students. Lenin said: “The moral concept formed by the subtle

influence on a person's early thoughts that has a great influence on his growth”. Teachers play an

important role in cultivating spirit of devotion, collective sense of honor and formation of outlook

on life. On account of traditional teaching method is co-operating process between teachers and

students, students are in a critical period in the development of knowledge and ability. As the

student's own hand, and the dependence of the psychological characteristics of the division, they

can’t develop without the promotion and guidance of teachers. Teachers have an important

implication for setting an example to their students at perfect personality and impacting students’

growth.

The Disadvantages of Traditional Learning

There are apparent defects in traditional English learning methods. First of all, most rigorous

schools in the country are recognizing that they simply won’t be able to teach 100% of the intended

curricular material. The traditional approach of “synchronized learning,” where students are

studying together at the same time that is difficultly to realized. Secondly, teachers have trouble

teaching students according to their ability and it is difficult to equally share their time for every

student. Teaching task must be fulfilled before the end of term. It also indirectly requires students

to follow up overall learning progress. But every student is different, there are big difference in

comprehensive ability and acceptability of knowledge. Under the background of unified learning,

students have problems adjusting their learning progress based on personal circumstances that

students fall behind in some learning aspects. Finally, the most essential point is that the students,

as the main body of learning, are passive receivers of knowledge in the whole teaching process.

Class teaching system, students are in a state of passive acceptance that the enthusiasm and

initiative of students are unsatisfactory, "Duck-stuffing" type of teaching could be easily emerged.

Learning Results of Different Learners under the Network Background

Study Background under the New Situation

College English is one of the most important basic courses whose requirement of teaching

programme constantly transforms and renews, which intends to continuously adapt to the demand

of The Times for the application of English. Sui mentioned in his doctoral thesis that under the

guidance of the Ministry of Education, the reform of College English has made some achievements.

Development from traditional classroom teaching to internet teaching shows that college English

teaching is undergoing a historic reform from static state to dynamic state (2013).Before the novel

coronavirus sweeping across the whole country, we could not predict that we are forced to be at

home in New year, we might not imagine high streets and back lanes have less noise than previous

days. We could not even imagine that schools are forced to close for long stretches. If so, it could

have a heavy impact on students’ learning. At this time The Ministry of Education puts forward a

slogan "suspending classes but keep learning", which motivates more schools and districts to take

the virtual learning environment and classroom much more seriously. It also realizes the dream of

contemporary young youth that is "you can study without going out" or "you can study while lying

at bed". Subsequently not only college students join in online learning but also primary and

secondary school students even jump into all varieties of virtual education.

The Ministry of Education freely opens all high-quality online courses and virtual simulation

experiment teaching resources for all universities. It also has developed 22 online course platforms

and diversified online teaching solutions. More than 24,000 online courses, including 1,291 national

excellent open online lessons and 401 national virtual simulation experiment courses that are

available for free. As the coronavirus continuously spreads to the U.S., so do cancellations of

conferences, trips, flights, schools, study-abroad programs and other events. As of April 2, at least

55.1 million students were out of school in the U.S., according to Education Week, which has been

keeping a running tally of school closing. At least 124,000 schools have been impacted by the

coronavirus crisis, according to their count – nearly all of the 98,000 public and 34,000 private

schools that exist in the country, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Districts

have been rushing to update emergency plans. Many are readying for possible school closures that

could stretch weeks or longer. Many are making plans to teach students online in case schools are

forced to close. In Miami, public school leaders said they're readying 200,000 laptops and tablets

for students in case buildings close and force classes online. The new-style learning way of "class

suspension but keep learning "is not suitable for our current situation but emerging in foreign

countries. It is inevitable that schools will have to grow and change from this pandemic. At this point,

the predictions are theoretical. A lot depends on whether schools and families treat this moment

like an extended snow storm – a month long closure after which everything goes back to normal –

or a fundamental shift.

Learning Results for College Students

However, as regards the advantages and disadvantages of online learning, there are two groups of

people I want to illustrate, respectively college students and primary and middle school students. It

is worth confirming that web-based English learning is positive for college students. First of all,

college students who enjoy definite objective, well-thought-out plan and executive force. College

students clearly and distinctly perceive that what they really need and what objectives they should

achieve after struggling for so many years. Because of that, enthusiasm and initiative of college

students are usual extraordinarily high. They needn’t supervision of parents and teachers. They can

initiatively take online learning and actively watch live broadcasting video at home or dormitory.

Secondly, college students enjoy enough self-control, the perseverance and faith of learning are

lasting and stable for college students. Strong willpower makes them demonstrate resilience and

helps them harness available online resources to tackle difficulties when students confront varieties

of certificates which are not easy to get. Next, spoken English ability can be practiced and improved

significantly. College students can make full use of online resources to make effective learning when

they confront the vast sea of knowledge online.

For example, the spring up of Facebook and Twitter, college students can communicate and

exchange with foreign friends across some software, they can talk with friends through words,

voices and videos. In this process college students enjoy culture clashes and cooperation with

foreign friends which can reinforce writing ability and boost ability to speak English. It also

indirectly helps students practice English listening and reading to some extent. Finally, college

students can clearly find out their learning disadvantages because of abundant learning experience

and lasting social practice. They can specifically choose appropriate APP software, such as some

students who have an impoverished hearing, they can harness BBC as a learning way, or some

students who have a poverty reading, they can utilize China daily to enhance reading speed.

Learning Results for Primary and Middle School Students

Nevertheless, there is skepticism about whether web-based English learning is positive for primary

and middle school students. First of all, primary and middle school students who lack the willpower,

some students have difficulty in controlling themselves. Without the supervision of teachers, it is

easy for students to divert attention from textbook knowledge and shift students’ attention to

unimportant matters, such as they will obsess themselves with playing games. As we can see from

class live-broadcast, not only teachers suffer unspeakably, but also students are very painful.

Secondly, for primary and middle school students, especially elementary school students, solid

foundation has significant implication for students in initial period of learning English.

Because good behaviors are usually fostered in initial period. For example, pronunciation is one of

the questions that always trouble student. In traditional learning, teachers can correct students'

pronunciation through on-site instruction, which help students lay the root for later English

learning. If there are some problems in the class, teachers can inspire students actively to think

deeply and passionately put forward questions. English class games can be organized by teachers

that the curiosity and thirst of students can be sparked. All of those web-based English learning can’t

realize. Last but not the least, although the resources of online learning are affluent and colorful,

there are weak logical thinking for primary and middle school students. The ability of knowledge

acquisition and transformation need to be enhanced. In this situation, it is easy for students to

misuse and misapply online resources, notably some students who lack sufficient understanding of

improved, finally let themselves into a dead end.

The Positive Effect of Electronic Software on Learning English

Firstly, web-based English learning is adaptive to everyone. Web-based learning can provide

learning chances for everyone who can learn anytime and anywhere. For instance, housewives, they

can study English after children have slept deeply. Old people are never too old to study, they can

acquire excellent English knowledge and renew their learning resources from foreign websites.

There are some sick children and the disabled who have burning desire to study. They have to stop

off school temporarily due to health reasons. The arising of virtual learning that helps them study

at home and realize their dream of going to school. Secondly, web-based learning enjoys ample

resources. The educational resources of southwest areas fall too far behind other developed areas

due to economic and cultural environment which beget students’ troubles in English learning. As

the widespread of smart phone and the development of economy, wireless network widespread

across the country, varieties of learning resources can be better gained by students to tackle

troubles in English. They also can acquire English knowledge from all over the world and watch

oversea English curriculums. It can tremendously enrich their English learning resources. Finally,

web-based learning can cut down expenditures. Before smart phones are emerging, parents usually

go to bookstores to buy numerous books and many examination papers in order to improve

children's learning. They often have a headache when parents pay for these books and examination

papers. With the smart phone’s epidemic intensifying, online resources are extraordinarily

prosperous. Smart phones are utilized to study and they are installed suitable learning software,

such as smart phones can be installed English dictionary, English listening and speaking software

and TED speech and so on. It not only broadens the range of student's knowledge in English but also

saves spending in purchasing books.

Using VOA and BBC to Learn English

From my perspective, it is very similar for most English majors about VOA and BBC.As they are the

official stations of foreign countries, they are extremely authentic and standard in both sentence

expression and pronunciation and intonation. There are quintessential promotion in listening and

speaking. When we utilize VOA and BBC to practice English, we can take intensive reading and

listening and repeatedly listen and read them until every sentence we can clearly understand. Based

on that, continuously imitate the pronunciation of every original sentence, pronunciation and

intonation can be significantly improved and simultaneously the level of spoken English also can be

boosted.

Using Mobile App for English Reading

Online mobile APP is fragmentation of reading oriented to take English reading. It mostly depends

on students who study actively. With the emerging of social and book-related APP, the interest of

English reading can be enhanced and learning content can be broadened through various mobile

APP for college students. We can utilize various English learning accounts in Wechat. For instance,

Fred notes, in which there are numerous excellent articles about foreign countries and there are

some detailed explanations of key words, key phrases and key sentences. If so, our vocabulary and

the level of grammar can be greatly improved. At the same time, our reading capability can be

advanced through reading beautiful essays. We still can download China daily, an official website

whose choice of words and the match of English phrases are worth taking into account. China daily

Using Intelligent Software to Boost College Students' Mobile Learning of English

Wechat as the novel network communication tool which is absolutely necessary for most people to

daily exchange and communicate. Wechat is simple and easy to use, it enjoys strong immediacy and

interactivity that help Wechat popular between many college students. Wechat can be employed for

learning English, because learning time and geographical restriction can be broken. It also can help

teachers strengthen interaction and exchange with students and fresh momentum can be injected

for college students to learn English under the network environment. Voice messages, videos and

pictures can be sent through Wechat, it still enjoys the function of group conversations.

Comprehensive improvement can be realized in listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation

with the influence of Wechat platform. Such as teachers launch innovative social topics or hot news

of the month to help students discuss and exchange their ideas through building up group

conversation on Wechat platform. All of that can motivate students' interest and improve learner

autonomy, problem can be defected and solved with the guidance of teachers.

Negative Influence

First of all, student distraction can be easily begot by smart phones. There is an enormous help if

students can enact strict measures to contain electronic software. However, they will easily divert

attention from textbook knowledge to pointless things which detracts from their learning when

some students harness mobile APP to study. Next, the English learning content of mobile APP is

relatively scattered, lack of system and strict organization. Some beautiful essays on websites which

needs students have enough capability to summary new sentences and new expressions. Finally,

mobile app learning software also has side effects for our eyes. The computer and phone radiation

are bad for our eyes, and we will lack of exercise due to stay in the room day by day. Students who

take online lessons every day, which increase the risk of myopia

Reflection on the Traditional English Learning Model

There are three reasons for triggering problems of the traditional English learning that are

summarized the following points: firstly, teaching effect is directly influenced by improper teaching

evaluating system. It also has a profound impact on students' understanding of English learning and

the formation of learning motivation. As always, foreign language teaching in China still places much

emphasis on summative assessment, which stresses the importance of grade and ignores student's

personality development in other aspects. The formation of instrumental motivation could be

caused by summative assessment that might go against the cultivation of learning ability and

practical ability. There is one more point, English study approaches are improper. In real teaching,

many teachers repeat what the book says, students acquire knowledge mechanically, and the

training of listening and speaking ability could be neglected. Moreover, student's ability and skills

of language practice could be diminished. Thirdly, we lack a good environment for English learning.

Traditional English method attaches importance to textbook content and final grade. It seems

English as knowledge rather than as a skill, there is a lack of interaction for students who have not

enough opportunities to demonstrate themselves and temper themselves.

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

With the emerging of Internet technology, the trend of using the Internet to assist English

learning seems overwhelming. But this is unlikely to mean we can reject and abandon our

traditional learning English method; we must acknowledge this method makes a contribution to

educational business in learning English. We should make sure to absorb the essence and discard

the dregs for traditional learning method. And we should combine the web-based learning with

traditional learning, foster strengths to make up for weaknesses, teach students in accordance with

their aptitude, all of those can help students gain fruitful learning results.

For example, for primary school students who bear poorly-disciplined, so the advantages of

traditional learning should be fully used. For instance, professionally trained teachers who carry

out educational activities with definite objectives. Chances can be actively created by teachers to

spur students to speak English as much as possible in class and after class, therefore, Language

sense and spoken English can be cultivated and improved through students communicate with their

classmates in English. Lively courseware can be made by teachers to attract the attention and

curiosity of primary school students. And it successfully helps teachers to complete the class

introduction. Middle school and high school are the most important stages in the whole learning

process, but they are also where students are most likely to go astray. In particular, there are

impoverished self-control for junior high school students and they are particularly prone to obsess

to Internet. Therefore, teachers should strengthen guidance to students and strictly control their

Internet addiction.

In online learning, mobile phones can be utilized to help students look up learning materials and

read some essays on weekend. It can boost their vocabulary and reading level. For the college

students who have a better self-control, clear learning aims and strong logical thinking, they fully

understand what they really need and how to realize. Therefore, both traditional English learning

methods and online English learning methods can be adopted by college students according to their

practical requirements. However, from my perspective, I motivate college students to make full use

of the Internet to study English that is new sort of innovation and imagination within the education

landscape. There is an advantage overwhelmingly for college students when they take online

learning. College students have ability to overcome shortcomings, completely exploit its advantages

to the full and maximize the benefits of online learning.
